Staying in Bangkok for One Week? – Top Tips from Expats

We’ve all heard the song ‘One night in Bangkok’ and you probably have some cherished memories that are connected to that tune, but in this article, we offer some useful information for those who are planning a short stay in this unique city.

Getting around in Bangkok

You are literally spoilt for choice when it comes to getting around in Bangkok; Skytrain is a very popular choice, which is fast and safe, with most central regions of the city covered. Search online for Skytrain maps with all the stations and you can either pay as you go or buy a daily/weekly ticket that allows unlimited travel. There are thousands of taxis that cruise the city and if the car shows a green light, it is available for hire, while a red light indicates there is already a passenger. Then there are Tuk-Tuks, which tourists seem to love; make sure you agree on the fare before you set out. There is a large network of canals in the City of Angels and they stop at many stations that are typically Buddhist temples. If you are staying at one of the Bangkok hotel 5 star luxury options, the Skytrain is ideal and you are likely to only be a few minutes’ walk from a BTS station.

Be careful jaywalking

As with most cities, you are breaking the law if you attempt to cross a busy street outside of the pedestrian crossings; do not expect traffic to automatically stop, as it won’t. Look both ways when crossing the street, even if it is one-way, as motorcycles can come from all directions.

Exchanging money

We definitely do not recommend that you change money at the airport, as the rates are typically lower than the exchange booths in the city. The top name seems to be Super Rich and they have booths all over the city. If you are looking to invest in real estate, sea view properties offer the best returns.

Vaping is illegal

This might surprise you, especially when street vendors are openly selling vape pens and liquid; the reason for the illegality is that vaping gear has no tax classification and if you really must vape, do it discreetly and don’t bring your vape stuff.

Marijuana

Thailand recently removed cannabis from the narcotics list and there are weed shops all over Bangkok; we advise you to be discreet if you smoke in public and the law is rather unclear at this stage.

Nightlife

Of course, Bangkok is famous for its nighttime entertainment and there are many bars and clubs where you can dance until the early hours. Khao San Road is well-known among tourists and is a great starting point for a night out; follow the crowd as the evening progresses.

The street food in Bangkok is like no other city and you can enjoy a wide range of delicious food for a couple of dollars. One thing is for sure, you will definitely be back to explore more of this unique metropolis.
